Definitions for common cannabis products and terms. This information is for general reference and is not medical advice.

Cannabinoid

A group of compounds found in cannabis. THC and CBD are two cannabinoids commonly listed on product information.

CBD

Cannabidiol. A cannabinoid that may be shown as a percentage or amount on a product page or package.

Concentrate

A product format made by separating selected compounds from cannabis material. Examples include hash, resin, rosin, shatter and wax.

Distillate

A refined cannabis extract often used in vape cartridges and some infused products.

Edible

A food or beverage product made with cannabis. Use the package and product page for the listed amount and serving information.

Flower

The dried flowering part of the cannabis plant, sold in weights and commonly prepared for smoking or vaporizing.

Full spectrum

A label used for extracts intended to retain a wider range of compounds from the source material. Product details vary by maker.

Gummy

A chewable edible. Product pages may list the package total, number of pieces and amount per piece when supplied.

Hash

A concentrate made from collected cannabis trichomes, which are pressed or otherwise formed into a solid product.

Hybrid

A common market label for cannabis with mixed genetic lineage. The label alone does not reliably predict an individual experience.

Indica

A traditional market and botanical label used in product classification. It should not be treated as a guaranteed description of effects.

Infused pre-roll

A pre-roll that combines flower with a cannabis extract or concentrate.

Kief

Loose trichomes collected from cannabis flower. Kief may be sold alone or used in infused products.

Lineage

The named genetic parentage or cross associated with a product, when the producer supplies it.

Live resin

A cannabis extract generally made from plant material preserved soon after harvest. Texture and composition vary by product.

Milled flower

Cannabis flower that has already been ground or milled before packaging.

Ounce

A common package size equal to approximately 28 grams.

Pre-roll

Ground flower prepared and wrapped for smoking. The package may contain one or several pre-rolls.

Resin

A broad term used for certain cannabis extracts. Check the specific product format and producer description for details.

Rosin

A concentrate commonly made with heat and pressure rather than a chemical solvent.

Sativa

A traditional market and botanical label used in product classification. It should not be treated as a guaranteed description of effects.

Shatter

A brittle or glass-like cannabis concentrate. The exact texture can change with formulation and storage.

Strain

A commonly used retail term for a named cannabis variety or cultivar.

Terpene

An aromatic compound found in many plants, including cannabis. Listed terpene information describes composition, not a guaranteed effect.

THC

Tetrahydrocannabinol. A cannabinoid whose amount may be listed as a percentage, milligrams or another regulated measurement.

Topical

A cannabis product designed for external use according to its package directions.

Vape cartridge

A cartridge containing cannabis extract for use with a compatible vaporizer battery.

Wax

A soft-textured cannabis concentrate. Consistency and composition vary by product.
